After the Month of Kernel Bugs, are you concerned about Mac OS X security?

    No - 62%

See, that bugs me. Everyone should be concerned about security. I believe OS X's overriding security feature is obscurity, and once that situation changes I can see the OS falling over very quickly.

One of the weakest links in the chain is the user, and if the user is not concerned then you have a problem.

Dont get me wrong, I think OS X is great, but it just hasn't been "weathered" in the wild like Windows has. If OS X becomes a viable target then we're in for a bumpy ride.

OSX is based on FreeBSD, which has been around for an eternity and includes modules from even older Unixy stuff. There's paying attention, there's worrying, and then there's running around with your hair on fire digging for a bomb shelter with your bare hands. We're at the pay attention stage.
MOKB showed that the kernel can be a source of bugs and that OS design should incorporate this problem into the design. This doesn't mean panic or worry or take a pair of scissors to your broad-band connection, this means Apple has some things to fix. It also showed that wireless is inherently insecure and the problems with drivers can affect Windows, Mac OSX and Linux.
Again, MOKB isn't all that important, it's Apple's response to problems that really matters.

I always wondered where "huffy" came from. :p

    [/off topic]

AAPL will recover, but perhaps not soon. The markets are in a state of confusion right now (I can imagine that this week was one roller coaster for day traders!), but Apple is a solid company with solid earnings, solid growth forecasts, and a solid roadmap for the near future.

I mean, it's not as if Apple is taking on suspect mortgages...:p

Huffy, of course, is manufactured in China by the Russell Corporation. :)

It is true, if your Apple stock has declined, selling is probably the worst thing you can do. If you thought it was worth $169, then it is definitely worth $130 to you. Nothing has really changed since it dropped from its high.

Ok, this thread is getting weird. Seriously, the BBW fetish thing grosses me out.
    ...
That moon girl has nothing about her face that's cute.

It's okay to have that opinion; I'm not asking anyone to agree with me. Admittedly, the freckles do nothing for me either.

My preference may be somewhat marginal, but it's a preference nonetheless. Now, if I got aroused by a vat of Crisco, that would be a fetish.

The feederism thing is definitely a fetish, and that turns me off too. Someone sent me a Jerry Springer clip of a BBW in a wading pool filled with whipped cream and chocolate syrup. It didn't excite me in the least. All I could think was, "Why did she allow herself to stoop that low?"

    What is "FA"?

In this lady's case it is not just fat, she has an actual goal to make it to total immobility. FFS, I'm huge but I walk and can even jog quite a distance just fine.

FA stands for Fat Admirer. It's a euphemism for a man who prefers fat women as romantic partners. We used to be called "chubby chasers", but that phrase has been adopted by the gay community to refer to gay men who like large men.

As I stated above, this woman doesn't really want to get to the point of immobility, as she stated in a later interview; the "goal" was more or less just a fantasy she had expressed, mostly for the benefit of her FA fans and site subscribers. The whole thing was little more than a bit of self-publicity.

Also iMacs are still shipping in 24hrs on the apple website, a good sign that the new iMacs are not coming just yet.

Well, that could be interpreted as:

If you order an iMac now, it will ship tomorrow. It just might be a newer model than the one you were expecting! :D

How did they find out that she's a transgender? It's not like women's restrooms have urinals...

They said "Why are you talking to my man?" to a transgendered woman in a women's "restroom"?
    Does not compute.

    Why not?

Wouldn't you know it, my Sister-in-Law's MBP just arrived Yesterday!

    CD or C2D?

If CD I would return in immediately, preferably unopened...

Thats what I hate about this update policy. Yesterdays investment is losing suddenly 30% of its value. Apple should really address this by lowering prices before such an update...

They probably made a change to the app store to add items to the "list of supported devices" and the developer left his test string in there. The Mac app store and iTunes app store probably share that bit of code, hence the mention of "mac". Its most probably meaningless.

My upload is better, but my download is the same.

I've had instances in which my download was 650kbps and my upload has been 1200kbps. It's been all over the board, but I'm still happy with it. Did you just install the new update?

Do you trust Wikipedia? :) In fact the line above this one on Wikipedia says:

Everything I've read that is sourced to Intel says an add-on card won't be possible. It's my guess that the integration for Thunderbolt needs to be deeper than an PCI Express card, especially with its capability to carry video/data. It may be that Intel does not want people confused by data-only Thunderbolt ports. OTOH, I'm not a Thunderbolt engineer, so I may be completely mistaken. :D

Technical issues aside - odds are that Apple would rather sell you a new Mac Pro with Thunderbolt onboard.

I am not a Thunderbolt engineer either...in fact, it is interesting (and odd) that Intel is only now announcing the availability of a TB developer kit.

Do you trust the Wiki? While a grain of salt is advisable, I merely reference the item. It does seem to me, however, that the line you reference is talking about a non-GPU PCIe card. I had posted an earlier comment referencing the Intel position that there could not be a TB card (because TB must directly access both the graphics processor and the PCIe lanes). This means that there will not be a simple TB add-on card like adding a FW800/USB 2 card in the past.

The line I referenced seems to indicate that it would be possible for a TB controller to be on a graphics card (and thereby gaining direct access to the GPU) and have direct access to the PCIe lane(s) in which the "TB enabled Graphics Card" is mounted with true (video and data) TB port(s) on the outside.

Would Apple prefer to sell you a new machine? Of course they would. Apple have a well established, if nasty, pattern of abandoning the purchasers of earlier hardware to their fate (not co-incidentally, it is one of the arguments against the use of the Mac platform frequently aired by the PC community).

I believe I mentioned third party developers. If not I do so now. It would be an interesting project for a third party manufacturer to integrate a TB controller and associated ports onto a graphics card that is otherwise the same as a supported graphics card so that it would be recognized by the OS.

Whether Apple have tied access to the TB ports in some bizarre manner which would make this impossible only some clever engineers would know after looking at the new OS & hardware implementation. Apple probably could not care less, but it is a market opportunity for somebody nonetheless.

The reason for the earlier reference to the data only possibility is the reality that external storage for Mac Pros is severely hampered by the lack of a fast interface unless one has made the transition to fibre.

A good RAID array could challenge the current TB bandwidth, but I doubt anyone would complain too loudly considering the lack of alternatives and the degree of improvement over the status quo.

    Cheers

VMWare is going to smoke Parallels when it comes out. I cant wait. I'm still a little bit miffed though that no one has gotten native partition support so we can use the same partition while virtualizing or dual booting.

Yeah, "accidentally," sure. The price and the buttons on the app store are clearly labeled. You don't just "accidentally" purchase this. It's only believable if the kid is still an infant and randomly tap on stuff, but 11 year old? Come on. Besides, there's an option to restrict the ability to install apps on the OS.

Kudos to Apple to do the refund. If the scenario was that the kid accidentally made an international call costing $$$, I don't think AT&T would budge.

It was done on an iPod Touch.
