Hi,
I am uncertain if this is the same problem as Findesiecle5's post from 4 days ago, so I have started a separate thread.
Although I have been recording for many years, I have never used MIDI before, and am having a problem getting GarageBand to recognize it. Actually, I have always had many, many problems with GarageBand despite my Mac Pro being 'empty' of all files except those created in the program.
My set up is:
Mac Pro Quad Core 2.66
1 TB HD space (combination of several empty, new hard drives)
5 GB RAM
Firestudio 26 x 26 Firewire Audio Interface / Preamp
OS X 10.6.2
GarageBand '09 5.1
I bought the Mac Pro specifically for use as a DAW and have not used it for anything else - I think that I have only connected to the net on a few occasions with it.
PROBLEMS
1. Sometimes, the computer records perfectly, although there is something wrong with the software interface for the Firestudio as it is impossible to set different output/monitoring headphone levels for each track (I have had an audio pro who deals exclusively in Mac products come and try to troubleshoot this on two occasions, and he is clueless about this specific problem).
2. On other occasions, though, I can't get the computer to record at all: on those occasions I can't even hear previously recorded material in GB, although I can see it playing.
3. One of the 'wrinkles' is that there are two different drivers installed for the Firestudio in the Mac and GB 'System Preferences' - one is called 'Presonus Firestudio', and the other is called 'Presonus 1394).
4. The crazy thing here is that I can hear the playback only when the Mac 'System Preferences' is set to 'Presonus Firestudio' for both Input and Output, and the GB 'System Preferences' for Input and Output are each set to 'Presonus 1394' - if I choose the same named drivers for the Mac and GB 'System Preferences', I cannot hear anything when the track is playing.
5. A few months ago, I upgraded to Garageband '09, 5.1 (398), but had had the above problems before this.
6. In order to accommodate the new version of GB, I upgraded my OS to OS X 10.6.2
ATTEMPTED SOLUTIONS
1. I tried to uninstall the Firestudio drivers and software and erase all trace of them from the system, by following instructions I found on the Presonus website (I found the Presonus people very unhelpful - although several people on the forums were more helpful)
2. I reinstalled OS X 10.6.2 three times in order to try to get rid of the problem
3. Before making the above changes, I changed the system drive to a brand new, never used, hard drive.
CURRENT STATE OF AFFAIRS
1. Although it would be nice to send different monitor output mixes to my headphone amp (see 1. under 'Problems' above), this is not essential, and I can record (most of the time, as I said above). So, I can record pretty consistently.
2. Having said that, sometimes I will inexplicably lose the ability to record, often during the middle of a project or during tracking
3. I cannot get rid of the two sets of drivers for the Presonus in 'System Preferences'
4. Today I tried to use MIDI for the first time. I had bought a MIDI - to - USB cable, which has two 'male' 5 PIN DIN connections on one end - one for MIDI IN, and other for MIDI OUT - and a 'male' USB connector on the other end.
I plugged both of the DIN connectors into the back of my keyboard, and I then plugged the USB connection into my Mac Pro.
I received the message that '2 MIDI Connections are Present' (or something to that effect), but was unable to get any input signal and was unable to hear my keyboard playing via the computer.
QUESTIONS
1. My main question right now is really about MIDI, as I have resigned myself to most of the above.
So, what am I doing incorrectly? As I understand it, this way of connecting should work, although now I am tempted to buy the alternative form of MIDI connector, which has DIN connectors on both ends, and then plug these into the MIDI IN and OUT on the back of the Firestudio.
Will this make a difference?
2. If anyone has any suggestions about any of the other problems, I would be very grateful.
Sorry for the length of this post, but I wanted to give a complete and detailed context for these problems.
Thanks,

I found this page with memory specifications for the new iMac (Mid 2011):
http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4621
I've ordered a 27" with the 3,4Ghz i7 CPU. I would like to do a RAM upgrade from the 4GB to 8GB.
Which RAM will you recommend?
I found these:
http://www.corsair.com/cmso8gx3m2a1333c9.html
Are they fine or should I buy something else?

Well on the apple store website, if you buy online the phone doesn't come until 3 weeks after your order is placed, so i'm guessing both apple stores and at&t stores will have a fair amount of phones in stock until mid-july or later.

Is there a preferred To-Do app for the MBP that syncs with the iPhone?
I use MS Exchange and have my email set up through mail and calendar set up through iCal. My calendars on iCal all sync on my iPhone. Tasks, however, do not sync from iPhone to MBP through MS Exchange (at least not through my hosted exchange provider).
Can anyone recommend a decent To-Do app for MBP that would sync with my iPhone? If it syncs with iPad - even better! I do not mind paying for the app on both devices if needed. I'm looking for something relatively simple. I don't need too many bells and whistles as that may actually make it more cumbersome to use for my purposes. Please shoot me your best recs!
TIA!

I just bought an iPod 2G of eBay for 30 bucks. According to the description it probably just needs a new battery so I bought one and a firewire cable. I assume all iPod generations should work with the current iTunes as my 3G does with no issues. I'm sure if they stopped iTunes support for any older models we would definitely hear about it.

You can probably get that to work, but you can't us Boot Camp Assistant to get you started. You will have to create a FAT32 partition in Disk Utility and then use that as a target for your Windows install.
Which versions of Windows are supported on your Mac will depend on which Mac it is so you may want to tell us.
The main difference between doing it this way and Boot Camp Assistant, is that BCA sets the default boot to the Windows partition, you will need to hold Alt/Option every time you boot when the Windows installer wants a reboot.

My daughter has a 5 year old 13" MacBook (black) with a 250 gig hard drive that seems to be dying (increasingly frequent "needs to be re-started" errors on boot up). I'd like to replace it, and would like recommendations. The one that is currently installed is a Fujitsu MHY2250BH. I don't know what size limitations her bios might impose, but if I'm going to replace it, I'd like to get her something a little larger, say 320 or 500 gigs.

Or you could network them together via (Gigabit) Ethernet cable.
last question. meaning i boot the computer in target disk mode and connect them with an ethernet cable? that will work?

Hi, guys - I'm just wondering whether I am making too big a deal of this. I have previously had reasonably good experiences with the folks at Other World Computing (www.macsales.com). Last summer, I bought one of their high-capacity (62 Watt-hour) Macbook pro replacement batteries to replace the dying battery on my wife's laptop. A couple of months ago, the aluminum faceplate fell off exposing the cells inside. For a few weeks, she simply used scotch tape to hold the faceplate on, but I figured that since I paid good money for it, I should take advantage of the warranty. What they sent back was a 58 Watt-hour battery. When I asked about this, they said there were some production issues with the 62 Watt-hour batteries and that they only carry 58 Watt-hour batteries now. When I suggested to the CSR that I was getting back less battery than I had initially paid for (the warranty's fine print says "When a direct replacement for the exact model number or part number is not available, OWC reserves the right to replace with an equivalent or higher graded item.") she said that the new battery is "better quality". I asked if I could have the previous battery back and just glue the faceplate back on, but I was told that the returned battery was disposed of. I'm annoyed that I had to pay for the return shipping on the defective battery and ended up with a lower-capacity battery. Do you think this is an acceptable exchange or should I just ask for a refund?

re: iPhone 4
firmware: 4.0.1
baseband: 1.59.00
unlocked: ultrasn0w
jailbreak: jailbreakme.com
I had unlocked my iphone last month and ever since then it's been working fine. i would have the occasional "no service" or the one service bar of death but nothing a quick reboot wouldn't fix.
HOWEVER, today out of curiosity, I removed my sim tray for a split second to look at my Tmobile sim. I quickly slipped the sim back in thinking everything would be fine. NOPE! the "no service" sign came back on and this time, it never went away. I have rebooted my phone 10 times already and nothing. I've also done a network reset which fixed nothing.
hours later, it now says "invalid sim" which i've never gotten before
I also noticed that my "cellular network data" tab is missing. It's no longer in my settings>general>network
I'm thinking of just restoring to factory settings, jailbreak with pwnage tool then getting a Gevey sim. I'm about ready to give up.
please someone help! :(

Hello,
With so little info, here's my tip:
-More ram is only (significantly) useful if you max out the RAM you have.
-WD hard drives have a very good record. I have 5 2TB greens, and 1 3TB green: love them all, they are perfect for storage. Go for the blacks if you're going to boot or work off them.

I'm looking for a comprehensive guide to Terminal commands in Mac OS X, specifically Snow Leopard and the upcoming Lion. It can be a faq file, online resource, a book, whatever. I would just like to learn to more efficiently use Terminal.
Anyone have any suggestions/recommendations? Perhaps someone offers an online course? I haven't checked out Apple yet, but maybe they have some sort of webinar? :D

How can I install GCC without Xcode? Most of the information I can find states I need Xcode.
I apologize for the tone of the first post; I am moderately frustrated (and probably shouldn't be).
Thanks to everyone who replied.

hey guys. I searched around and couldn't find a post with this.
My xbox360 just died yesterday.. and since PSN is still down.. I want to watch netflix on my tv. I have the 2011 MBP.. and the HDMI adaptor. I can get video and audio to my tv without a problem. Now, is there anyway to make the output to 16:9 for my tv? When I made netflix full screen.. it cut off top part of Safari.. and the bottom part.
Any answers?
Also... Does the refresh rate need to be on any particular setting?
Thanks guys!

iWeb makes 70% of the objects on your page into images. Makes websites slow to load and incredibly SEO unfriendly. Also, it only makes websites that fully support Safari (webkit).
Very true :-)
I just want to build a photography website with the minimal fuss and maintanance.

Hello there. I understand that are a million resources out there to help people who have spilled something on a computer, but I haven't been able to find anything that relates exactly to my problem.
Anyway, since I'm a bit of an idiot, I managed to spill a really small amount of water, and I mean really small amount, on my late 2009 Macbook. I did the usual, power off, flipped upside down, leave to dry for a week trick, and the computer itself seems to be working fine now. When I plug in a USB keyboard.
Without it, however, it's being very odd. At the login screen, it looks as though I'm typing, but even keys such as enter and shift and showing the dots of hidden letters. When I try typing on any other document however, nothing comes up at all. Just sounds as though it's a bit broken with that, doesn't it?
Well, when I went on to play a game on it today, using the USB keyboard of course, I accidentally started pressing the WASD keys to move my character around. And it worked. But it still won't allow me to type elsewhere.
I truly have not got a clue what's wrong with this thing, but I'm worried that it's a serious problem with the computer. Could it be my logic board? I'd really appreciate some help cause this is killing me here, I can't afford to buy a new one to be honest, so I'm hoping there's a cheap fix to this.
Thank you very much if you read this.
