    I can read Wiki too...

GPL is a license. GNU is a foundation. I corrected as to the licensing terminology..

Per your 12 years, trump - my 25...

By the way - openstep is an evolution of nextstep when next went "open source". it may of been put of the GNU license, but it wasnt there back in 1984 when it all started... Per Saiman, If you know WHY he left MIT in the first place (after all you might want to read the whole wiki), youd know what was going through his mind in the creation of GNU.

Lastly, the Minix kernel came from Posix. So the path Posix->Minix->Linux is valid.

It's definitely not perspective. You can see the metal piece is raised higher because the white sections are thicker than the black sections. A 2 year old could figure this out.

Sober up, Steve. Less time on Time Machine and more time on solidifying the system.

AppleTalk: Who uses it, and why?

I'm pretty sure that any time you use Personal file sharing, you are using AppleTalk.

EDIT: More info... Personal File Sharing is based off of Apple Filing Protocol (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Apple_Filing_Protocol). From wikipedia:

AFP versions 3.0 and greater rely exclusively on TCP/IP (port 548 or 427) for establishing communication, supporting AppleTalk only as a service discovery protocol. The AFP 2.x family supports both TCP/IP and AppleTalk for communication and service discovery. Many third-party AFP implementations use AFP 2.x, thereby supporting AppleTalk as a connection method. Still earlier versions rely exclusively on AppleTalk. For this reason, some older literature refers to AFP as "AppleTalk Filing Protocol". Other literature may refer to AFP as "AppleShare," the name of the Mac OS 9 (and earlier) AFP client.

In the UK, there's a 4GB Reach bundle. Only reason I mentioned it.

Yeah I heard about that on a news site. They were laughing about it since you can't do co-op with them. Ironic.

Mine is the 250 GB though so should be good to go.

    1) I own both.

They are rectangular and have icons on home screens.

There's only so much one can do with smart phone styling.

It's not like Apples on the verge of going out of business.

    Much ado over nothing.

Like a teenage bully, Apples beyond stupid.

    2) You actually believe clueless sales people?

The fact that "there's only so much you can do with smart phone styling" does not give one company the inalienable right to copy another's patents, or blur the line between their product and the one which they're trying to copy.

The size of Apple's bank account has nothing to do with this. Disney has sued much smaller companies in the past, and won. Because the courts recognize the need to protect valuable intellectual property, even when sofa lawyers don't.

Whether I believe clueless sales people or not is irrelevant. Clueless consumers often do. How else can you explain Android's rise? (zing! :o).

Coincidentally, a couple of days ago was recompiling the kernel and it appeared that OpenDarwin (DarwinBuild) was directing the latest plists to a 10.7 kernel.

Completely wiped out my MBP and as a result, no joy whatsoever in bless'ing the System as all. You have any experience in the past re the Darwin build process?

How could he move her when he probably broke his back during sex?

Creative positioning + bed with a good bit of "give", e.g. Memory Foam = enjoyment without that "crushing" feeling. This has served me well, and that's the best way I can explain it without going into TMI territory.

And by "copied Palm" of course you mean "patented themselves back before Feb. 2010."

    http://www.tuaw.com/2010/02/03/apple-granted-patent-for-touch-sensitive-bezel/

    http://www.patentlyapple.com/patently-apple/2010/02/apples-ipad-may-gain-an-intelligent-bezel-in-the-future.html

He's referring to inductive charging, not intelligent bezel, if I am correct.

    FTA:

While the art weve seen shows some form of inductive or touch charging, our sources cant confirm whether or not Apples working on its own version of cable-free juicing. Theres also a swipe area shown in the drawing which appears to be on the bottom and / or top of the device that could very well be an NFC point, but thats pure speculation on our part.

Wondering why they don't if the hardware is there and the network supports it already.

Because the hardware is in the CDMA phone on Verizon. The AT&T iphone 4 doesn't have the same chip. If the iphone 5 does, it's still up to apple and at&t to enable it.

Do you still think it's ugly?

I think all iphone mockups are ugly. Only the official iphone renders and pictures on apple's website seem to do it justice. I hated the iphone 4 from giz's pictures even.

AT&T has hands down the worst service I have ever experienced.

It is as though they were operating in an emerging mobile phone world sometime in the early 80's when phones were the size of a Sat phone or you carried it in its own portable case.

In all the years I was with Verizon I had maybe 10 dropped calls.

They should be ashamed of themselves. But really what do they care, they have the iphone exclusively for the time being.
I must say this reflects poorly on Apple who picked these idiots in the first place.

Honestly, on a day to day basis, I think about going back and just giving up, the service is just terrible and I live in NYC! Where there are towers everywhere, and I usually have 5 bars.

Despicable profit seeking, customer service unfriendly whores is what they are!Blame Verizon then. Apple approached Verizon first, and Verizon was unwilling to allow Apple to have full control over the OS, the design of the iPhone

itself, or to make concessions regarding profit sharing. CDMA would not have been an ideal choice for a global phone, in any event.

    Hi,

I'm thinking of switching from Verizon to AT&T to get the iPhone. However, I'm hearing horror stories of up to 30% dropped calls in the NY area.

For all iPhone/AT&T users in northern NJ and NYC area, can you verify that you experience around 30% of dropped calls?? is this true??

    http://gizmodo.com/5370493/apple-genius-bar-iphones-30-call-drop-is-normal-in-new-york

I want the iPhone, but not if it comes with such bad service!!

    Thank you,

olimits7Northern NJ: zero dropped calls, excellent coverage overall.

Never ever ever ever ever ever ever ever ever ever ever ever ever ever.........

...take anything an AT&T rep says at face value. This is coming from a type of representative, where in my battles earlier this year with AT&T attempting to get back to unlimited data, who told me there was nothing they could do but gave me advice on how to seamlessly switch to Verizon (including how to port my phone number and suggested I keep my AT&T account open until I switch to VZ).

While I fully believe this story did actually take place, I believe the rep has 'ZERO' credibility.

FYI: My later wrangling with corporate was a lot more pleasant and yielded me my Unlimited iPhone data plan back.

That's typical Apple. Intel chipset does not support USB 3.0? No USB 3.0 for Apple fans!

It's not built into the current Intel platform standards. That doesn't mean it doesn't support it. Most of Intel's reference boards even include it.

NVIDIA GPUs do not work with SandyBridge? Stick with outdated C2D CPUs for years.

Nvidia GPUs work fine with the Sandy Bridge platform. The problem was that they were not licensed to make chipsets for intel processors past the Montevina platform.

What's more important - CPU/chip or case? In case of Apple, the case always wins. Apple is all about image. Once designed, the case should stay unchanged for many years. Apple will wait until somebody designs a "suitable" chip. Is not it kind of backward?

Apple is using the same CPUs as everyone else, for which their enclosures are extremely competitive in terms of dimensions.

Then we hear excuses from Apple fans why Apple could not use separate USB 3.0 controller. This would require redesign of the motherboard - Wow! Think of it - redesigning a motherboard! Some companies redesign tens of motherboards every year but Apple? No way. Now iPhone users will be stuck with outdated technology for a year or two and they will be feeding us all kinds of excuses why LTE can not be used in iPhone. Just ridiculous.

There's no question that two radio chips would have caused the tiny logic board inside the iPhone 4 to grow. That means the battery gets smaller or they make some other sort of sacrifice which potentially changes the housing. Too much work to release the same iPhone on a different network, especially since apple wouldn't want to sacrifice battery life.

Since apple has to design to the greatest common denominator, I doubt they'd increase the size of the phone given the number of outspoken size critics on this forum.

Doesn't affect me either way - I'm staying away from Vista for as long as I can. It took them what - 5 years? - to get XP to some reasonable semblance of semi-security. Even now it's no great shakes; it just means some South Korean kid can't pull another large-scale Blaster type of hack.

Steve Gibson (http://grc.com/) (love him or hate him) reports that Vista's rewritten network stack, through the various betas, has been shown vulnerable to a number of the exploits that more mature stacks (e.g. BSD's stack, the one MS used to quietly use) have fixed over the past decade! It just seems ludicrous.

Although I'd love a new enclosure with the HD swapability of the MB, I didn't think this round of updates would include that. Besides, I'm thinking that when the MBP form factor changes significantly with new latch, HD swapping, etc, we'll see Steve on stage for that one!

I'm pleased with this update - more RAM (lot's more than expected, thanks apple!!!), decent HD options (for my needs - only $100 more to upgrade to the 160GB/5400 - I'm good with that), and FW800 returns to the 15".

Thanks Apple. Now I'll patiently wait for refurbs of these (6-8 weeks) and I'm ordering. Or, should I finally join ADC and get the faster 15" with discount basically gives me one year of ADC for free.... :)

To be honest, I kind of have everything I want. (mainly my Mac and phone). I think for Christmas I would like a few hundred bucks (just incase I wanted to buy something) and certainly a new watch, which I might end up buying myself before then.

LOL same here; Finally got a mac after begging my parents for 3+ years.... ended up buying it myself :). And I have my Blackberry; so there's actually nothing I want this christmas. And if I did end up wanting anything I'd buy it myself sooo.... nope there's nothing

    Exciting to hear.

Hopefully they've entered a period of sustained growth, one that can carry them far into the future.

... though will they ever break through that 5% glass ceiling?
Given that they're at 4.7% (averaged), I'll guess they'll cross 5% within the next calendar year. (Though I suspect it may happen before MWSF)

September would be a nice time-frame. Since iPhones are mostly unlocked/PAG over here, they'd make a nice gift for Christmas. They could benefit from this particular release (closer to Christmas) by expecting greater sales; thus, they may lower pricing.
