This is not what you originally said. You said "unless every normal person has a tech friend/relative to keep the tablet working/updated" which is something else altogether, about personal ability. Why else would they have to be a "tech friend". If it was only about having one "period" then any dumbo friend/relative with a computer would do.My argument wasn't changed, but it might have been misunderstood. If every normal person was using the tablet, it would only be their tech friends who had a true computer in addition to a tablet (my implication being that only techies maintain multiple personal computers). So all the normal tablet users would need tech friends for the occasional sync. Sure, any dumb friend with a reasonably modern computer would do, but the idea is that all these dumb friends have moved on to tablets as well. At some point, everyone has tablets, and only the techies have a second, "real" computer.
You can get apps without a computer. You can get music without a computer. You can get TV shows and movies without a computer. You can get mail without a computer. You don't actually need to sync anything. If you do not have anything to transfer over anyway (your "it's going to be the only one he's using" scenario), then you don't need a desktop.I'm wondering if you've ever tried a "never synced" iOS device. It actually is limited in some fairly annoying ways. For "normal" people, one of the biggest is the inability to manage photos. Most everyone is talking about the hardware, but what about the software that Apple develops? Gesture technology, 3D rendering, AI, all the graphic intensive stuff Apple has always been known for. There's a lot of potential for software application outside of the Apple hardware the military may be interested in too.
Now, a hardened Macbook Pro or iPhone would still be cool! :D

I am about to order an ibook. I am running a bit against time because i would like to have the computer as soon as possible for a short course i
want to take.
When they say it is shipping within 3-5 days, is it more like three days, or more like five days - I am doing one or two minor upgrades on the original 12" ibook computer. One, with the keyboard from English to Western Spanish; and perhaps upgrade the HD to 60 GB. I�ll also be using the 2-day option for shipping.
How long do you think it is more likely to take for the computer to be delivered?

Which cameras in particular. It already supports all the serious Pro cameras if you ignore the very recently announced Canon and Nikon amature DSLRs.

Also I found that some things easily accessible in windows are not accessible at all in mac OSX. I felt like the computer was "dumbed down" for me. The iMac 27" is my favorite.. none of the all-in-ones it's compared to are even the same size on that chart. Even if you build a computer with the same equipment it's more:

see this youtube video and you will be able to determine whether CPU affects the overall speed more than GPU. This guy compared 11" MBA(with 320M graphics) and 13" sandy bridge MBP with SSD(with Intel 3000HD graphics )

Of course sandy bridge MBA won't use full power sandy bridge. But you will know that MBA's performance is just overpraised by SSD, not by GPU. Once other notebooks get SSD, MBA's benefit is only limited to small form factor and weight.(maybe + high resolution)

Additionally, people are happer buying Macs if they know they can switch back to Windows if it doesn't work out. One of the major barriers to owning a Mac has been removed by the Intel switch (whatever my misgivings on the subject.)
It's simply ridiculous to argue that the ads have helped sales. Sales would be much higher now than they would have been six months ago even if Apple had stopped advertising completely. The question is whether they would be even higher if they weren't insulting their target audience. The answer, of course, is yes.

Give her some of her own medicine. When you notice her noticing you, before she can turn to make it to the backroom, let out an ungodly scream of, "Oh my god, she's in bed with the CIA and has bugged my house in order to know when I will be coming to the Apple Store so that she can be here before me!" and turn and run out of the store, making sure you run into any cardboard displays as well as the security machines that beep when you try to steal stuff. That way she'll know how it feels to be indirectly accused of being a creepy stalker.

I can see at least one good reason to have another model of some form:

Currently during the Jan-Jun period, iPhone buyers can only choose from a single model that's six to eleven months "old", with a fairly static price.
Compare that to say, Android buyers, who always seem to have a choice of getting the latest and greatest if they want, or even buy an older model with a possibly nice discount.
Last year, Android ate iPhone sales during the above period. No doubt it will happen again this Winter and Spring. That's a LONG time to be number two (or three) in sales each year. A second iPhone model could change that.
I'm not saying I think they will do this, but it makes sales sense.
