I'm too chicken to install it, just like the SMC firmware update for the fans. I've had no problems at all with my MacBook (purchased in May) so I know it will screw something up. I know nobody cares but for some reason I wanted to post it. :(

    Bad move...

Obviously, there is huge demand for cheaper Macs. Cheap doesn't equal bad!

Mac minis should start at $399
    iMacs should start at $899
    MacBooks should start at $799
MacBook Pros should start at $1499
Mac Pros should start at $1499

There is no reason this wouldn't work.

I wonder if they will allow the free education ipod touch with the 11" MBA this summer?

i'm hoping so. i think the deal has always applied to the $999 white macbook. (correct me if i'm wrong.)

then again, the ipod touch went up in price last year. i've wondered whether they might change it to "free ipod nano" or something. hope not.

    we'll see.

The real question is, how does apple expect to sell the new Mac Pro when so many of the apps that PROs use are not universal and will be slower than they are on current power macs. Why not just get a refurb to tide you over?

I know they have to release these I'm just saying that it's going to be a hard marketing sell for a lot of people.
We have graphic artists using new Macbook Pros, they didn't know what Rosetta was, they just know Photoshop flies on the new machines. They don't care about Universal versions of software, they care about working fast and efficiently. They all love the new Macbook Pros.

Just to clear up a few things, the schools network was fully protected, so I was working without any Internet. Despite this, I was still a threat? I'm pretty sure the IT guy was just an idiot. I'm tempted to take the air again... But that's probably a bad idea right? :(
And so you know, i'm 16 and in my last year of high school, studying music. Logics pretty great to have around, and the schools music software is just awful; so I'd really miss not having it with me...
Thanks for everyones interest in the subject, it's really appreciated.

And I'm in the UK, so i'm not sure about legal information.

Move is also pricey, but has the slight advantage of being a scalable system.

Not really scalable. You need a game, you need the camera + move controller. And to be honest you need the nunchuck if you want to play something like resi-evil as it's impossible to do so holding standard controller in one hand.

Kinect also feels more of a quality product compared to my glowing dildo controller and it'sy plastic camera. The way move is motorised and moves itself to get you in shot - the bulk and weight of the device actually do scream of genuine quality. I was taken back by it as I was expecting Toy and got high tech gadget.

But you are right it's down to games. Best game on Move for me is Tumble (and because it's 3D on top of move enabled means it really feels different even if the premise is so simple)...

At least from my own experience I can say Kinect launch games are certainly more tailored to the device initially, but for me the only game I can see myself playing beyond parties is Dance Central and that's mostly to keep fit.

I can't see any hardcore games for it - but you never know.

good on Apple for improving the speed of Rosetta, but it would be so much easier is M$ made Office a UB...

I have no problem with Office on my imac. I can't figure out how people think it can run slow. It doesn't do anything processor intensive for 99% of people. Now, Photoshop on the other hand...

They probably don't want you to make music or burn it to dvds anymore- just buy stuff on their itunes store.
Without idvd or garageband, it's a useless upgrade for me.
No, they want you to purchase Logic instead.

I have a 40GB that still works from a decade ago. You are not supposed to use hard drive for other purposes than just installation and copying files. Hard drives can last just as long as DVDs. Its far easier to scratch a dvd than to scratch the platter in the hard drives. You can also simply back up the hard drive to another hard drive or have the company send you a replacement for a fee just as you can with DVDs.
And it's far easier to drop HDs so your $1200 sw is DOA. It always depends on how you take care of your stuff. I have thousands of CDs/DVDs, and none of them is scratched; obviously I do not throw them around my desk either.

Look at it this way....if something as interesting as this ever gets implemented...it can only come from Apple. Like 3rd party iPod dock devices now, you can have tons of 3rd party inserts that use the connector the MacBook would provide.

You can have 3rd party keyboard inserts with (Photoshop, Final Cut, Soundtrack, Aperture) shortcuts on the keys, you can get an insert with a graphics pad and a few appropriate keys for again...photoshop. An x-plane fan? How about an insert with flight controls (switches and the like) on it?

Think of all the fun.... and with the patent...it would only come in Apple MacBooks.

I don't post here much and don't want to get caught up too much in the hoopla but here is our point of view:

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FMMGQN2R9UE

I'm not posting a youtube file for self promotion or anything as it's the only video I've ever posted on youtube but it's a crappy made comparison of my 3GS and my wifes 4.

The video's are not altered in any way and they happen to match timing exactly which was cool... Neither phone will completely drop and they are done in my home recliner where we have 100% reception always.

Read the description to the video if you want to know my thoughts I guess : )

FYI, You're description states both the 3gs and Ip4 are on the right.

That's still far out in the future.

I guarantee you that iLife '11 and Mac OS X 10.7 will be delivered via CD/DVDs.

I don't think it is as far as some people may think. There are already good examples of similar systems. In the UK, most TV Channels deliver content online. The BBC were first (i think) with iPlayer. They offer their HD content via iPlayer as well.

I am sure BT made some complaints initially over the extra demand placed on them. However, the other channels followed and BT had to suck it up.

There will certainly have to be a period of transition. Especially for countries with less developed infrastructure.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I thought when I was in chemistry class in high school that we learned that magnesium and water have an explosive reaction -- if you thought lawsuits about earbuds conducting electricity when you get hit by lightning were bad, wait until several thousand people catch fire while listening to their iPod in the rain.

I'm renting a lot of content through the iTunes Store (Apple TV) with an US account and it works like a charm (I'm from southern Germany). HD content can be watched as advertised almost instantly. So either their US servers have enough bandwidth or there really are servers in Europe.
Apple (as any company of any significant size offering things to download) uses CDNs all over the world which act as sort of regional and local caches. These CDNs are likely to be operated by third-parties.

Despite "high hopes" for going green, the current reality of this is that about 45% of a U.S. Volt owners will be using a coal-powered car.

I don't think anybody here is arguing in support of Coal-fired power plants. We're just saying that this is another issue that needs to be addressed, but it would be foolish to wait for 100% renewable electricity before we start electrifying our fleet. A typical car spends 10-20 years on the road before it's retired. Even if every new car sold from today onwards were electric, it would take 20 years before we have a 100% electric fleet. Currently, expectations run from maybe 3-10% of the market (as in new car purchases) being electric (or at least plug-in) by 2020, depending on who you ask. Fleet electrification will be a very long process, and this can happen parallel with renewable electricity development.

Now, besides this argument, just looking at the current situation and ignoring future potential for improvements, you'll find that even a 100% coal-powered car is more efficient than an equivalent, efficient ICE car (not by a lot, but still better).

Cleanliness is another story, that depends on how you define it. CO2 goes hand in hand with efficiency, as its a direct product of fossil fuel combustion, so again, a 100% coal-powered plug in car is slightly better in this regard. The numbers I've run have shown that NOx and SO2 emissions actually go up with a 100% coal-powered plug in car vs a modern ICE. Those emissions have been drastically reduced in cars over the past 20 years to the point that they're actually quite clean. One thing to consider though is that in this case, these emissions cause local-scale problems, so displacing those emissions away from dense populations actually does help, at least in terms of urban air quality. SO2 can cause acid rain though, and that is maybe somewhere between a local, city-scale problem and a global problem. That said, I don't see why cleaning up coal power plants should be any less aggressive than cleaning up vehicle emissions has been in recent years.

Also, keep in mind that it's very difficult for the power supply from power plants to ramp up and down to meet demand, and as such, a lot of energy has to be burned off and wasted at night when demand is low. That's why some places charge a lot less for electricity at night. If most people use their car to get to work and simply charge up for 8 hours while they sleep, the overall emissions per kWh are reduced, and the numbers swing more in the favour of plug-in vehicles.

Why did you have to remind me?

Because you were becoming irrationally exuberant - I thought that you needed some balance ;) .

I also wonder about this Intel diagram:

    http://www.geekwithlaptop.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/03/intel-thunderbolt-3.jpg(click to enlarge)

If this applies to the Imac TBolt ports, then the two TBolt ports in fact share bandwidth from the single PCIe x4 connection. The combined max throughput of the two ports would be no better than that of a single TBolt port.

Another moot point, though, since no TBolt devices can be purchased.

Are you referring to what you see in the photo?

I suggest you look at pictures of current Formula 1 cars. They are constructed of carbon fibre panels, painted, and are gorgeous.
