They're too big to go into a pocket..., they can't be shared around like books, they'll need recharging if they're used heavily. The ipad is a lot of things, sure, but there's lots of things it isn't, too.
Can't fit in a pocket... that's an advantage for schools like the middle school I help, because they can't "walk off" with a student. We currently use carts with Mac laptops. They charge up while in the cart, then get handed out to students for a group project. If they were iPads they would take less space in a crowded classroom and boot up faster. I hope they would be as durable. They don't need to be shared like books. Each student would have one, but if two students had to share one it would be big enough for that too. And we'd save money over replacing the laptops with newer laptops as they age.
First-issue iPads would be fine for group projects that involve access to websites (without Flash) and word processing, but with suitable new applications I hope clever teachers would be able to find even more useful educational activities for their students. And I know the students would be enthusiastic about using them.
When we first started replacing chalkboards with digital whiteboards, some people thought it was a solution looking for a problem, but soon teachers found how to use the new potential to do much more than they could with an old-fashioned board. Word is far more productive for most people IMO because Pages just isn't a word processor. I haven't used Pages all that much and I don't own it so I suppose I can't really complain about it too much but when I have dabbled with it, it's come across as a little over-simplified. It might just be because I'm used to Office apps which are admittedly pretty bloated but nevertheless, Pages just gives the impression of being underdone and kind of useless for most people.
I fail to see how it "just isn't a word processor?" I'm fairly amazed at the amount of negative responses this program has received, especially after Apple set the example with Keynote 1 and the glorious reception of version 2.
Pages is a godsend for me. I'm not sure what you people are smoking but writing is not about buttons, formatting, and margins. At the heart of writing is simplicity, I believe, and it seems a lot of people become troubled and even distraught at the apparent lack of "function." Sounds a lot like the first impressions PC users get of Macs...
Writing is a craft like art. You don't hear graphic artists complain about their palettes! I'll never understand why people want toolbars; confusing, myopic icons that march on in an endless, tyrannical parade across your screen. I despise nothing more than looking for what I'm trying to do in Word. Is it hidden behind this arrow? Maybe if I right-click? Alas.

I built a table that links directly to bestbuy, walmart and target (http://kiernanvandoorn.wordpress.com/2011/04/01/where-in-the-world-can-i-buy-an-ipad2-now/) to check inventory levels. it helps, but with very little supply there isn't any good news hiding on the back shelf. And there are horror stories all over the next about bad practices like forcing customers to buy service protection plans just to buy from existing inventory. Kinect is more for the kids. They really enjoy Wii Sports so if there's an alternative (or blatant clone) with decent graphics for Move or Kinect, they'll be happy. It'll be interesting what 'Family' type games are released for both the new motion sensing systems. If you're going to wildly flail around the livingroom, you may as well do it in HD.
I personally just want a shiny black 360 to put under the livingroom telly. King of Fighters '98 Ultimate Match (and maybe '02 UM?), Mark of the Wolves and both Virtual-ON Oratario Tangram and Force. Just need Hori to do another run of Twin Sticks...

I don't know anyone who bought Joe's single. Indeed, I don't know anyone who bought a single by any of the people listed above. Why would you? They're not that good, the singles are not that good, it's just musical magnolia, dull, tedious, indeed - off all the things it could be described as, having the 'X-Factor' is not one. Will Young was something a bit unique and he has a personality. Leona is fairly damn good as well. THey are clearly the exception, however, not the rule.
Yet somehow, every year, this crap fills out TV screens for months, it fills the news for months, it fills the airwaves for months. Hours and hours of freaks embarassing themselves, then hours of programs talking about the hours of freaks embarassing themselves. Then the news, every news outlet, reporting on the freaks. Then it starts all over again, the finalists, none of whom exhibit any exceptional talent. Then hours and hours of programs dedicated to those 12, more hours dedicated to re-covering it, and again, it's in the news everywhere.
At the end of it, an average singer, a tedious song, and a very brief career.
I think this entire campaign was the rest of the country just saying "We're bored of this ****"

There is much to be said for cultural bias, and by "bias" I don't mean anything specifically negative. What I mean is one's culture gives one a certain frame of reference. And having worked for Sony for 5 years, one thing I have learned is not to try and judge things inside of Japan by my own standards, since Japanese frequently don't look at things the way I do.
It's my impression that, for instance, Japanese people don't look for ways of "sticking it to the man" like we do here in the U.S. I don't mean that someone from Japan doesn't know about the concept of "fighting city hall", but that it's handled differently.
I'm not quite sure how to convey the same sentiment in Japanese Apple commercials that we have here, since we have no trouble calling Microsoft "evil" in all the senses of the word, whereas I think in Japanese culture, the priority is more on either helping another save face or at least remaining neutral in such matters (though by all means someone here who's a native or someone who is an expert on Japan and it's culture, correct me if I'm wrong.)
Can someone here please give myself and/or the rest of us some guidance with respect to how far one can go in Japan in speaking of others before they cross some socially unacceptable line? I really don't know, and would like to.

All of the Verizon stores around me (Lawrenceville/Buford GA) were sold out of the 16GB Ipad's. I decided to call up to the store in Athens, which is only about 35 minutes from my house, and sure enough, they are holding one for me until I get off work. It sounded like they have plenty up there, due to the fact that when I asked if they had any 16GB's the gentleman said, yeah...how many do you need? I was kind of shocked due to Athens being the college town and figured this would be the first place to sell out of them. Anyway, keep looking people...they are still out there.

I would love to see either a 13" MBP or a 13" MB with the option for discrete graphics, though a lower quality card (e.g. Rad X1300/1400 compared to the MBP Rad X1600). I have had several co-workers come by my office to ask me about Macs since the ads started to air. Two have made the switch and are rippingly happy about it. I hear comments like " iPhoto really does see my camera and open when I plug the USB cord in" and " Mail is so much easier than the e-mail on my PeeCee was" all the time. I believe that anyone who feels antagonized by the ads really needs to take a close look at themselves. After all. they are only ads. I have yet to meet a hard core Windows user who has taken offense at the ads. Our IT guys here are always razing me about Macs, but they think the ads are cool. I like to remind out IT director that he sort of looks like the PeeCee guy. In my humble opinion, the vast majority of folks out there realize that these are ADVERTISEMENTS and do not take any offense.

Really? So if I buy a MBA, using your logic above, then one of the reasons I bought it was because it could play games. This is your opinion, your view of why some people buy a MBA. Just like what I said in my previous post was purely my personal opinion. Not dictation of anything. I'm sure many people agree with you and some that don't.
That's you. I simply stated how I personally use my computer. It's different for everybody. Not everybody is like me or you. Not everyone is a musician or creative artist. Of course, the backlit keyboard is a welcome addition. I never said anything against that.

I was merely pointing out examples of the uses of a backlit kb (creative artists, users not as proficient in keyboarding) and the different audiences (gamers, portable users, media) that bought into an MBA.

If you watch the 2nd Youtube video, at around 40-43 seconds you will see the volume buttons dont have their engraved "+" and "-" markers, so this is definately a prototype phone. I also noticed where the rear camera is there is no silver ring around it as well. It also looks as if the antenna is also painted, but this is probably the light reflecting plus the very visible "ring" around the home button (raised). On the same video at 1.08 in the Settings screen you will see "Carrier Settings" with a new "C" logo, plus "Developer" with the "D" and "Internal Settings" with an "M" logo. At 1.13 you will then see when he choses "Carrier Settings" you will see "Show WiFi RSSI" / "Show Internal Apps" / "VMAC" which to me seems to possibly mean "VirtualMAC" which may be the reason for the new search function as well. Under "Logging" in "Carrier Settings" you see "Logging" / "Baseband" and "Enable VM Logging". At 1.15 I could make out the following options "Enable Bypass Mode" / "Activate Bluetooth Test Mode" / "Activate Data PDF Context" / "Deactivate Data PDF Context" and "Ping Testing". At 1.25, I also noticed under "General" an option that says "File Sharing"
So far, most of these options seem to indicate this is a test version of iOS.

Is there a way to specify which comments you get push notifications for? I'm interested in get pn for comments my updates but not really interested in getting pn for my friends status update which I comment on. E-mails are fine for those.
