Sensible defaults. Usability before looks. The iOS scrollbars might look better but they remove usability. Same with the slider, it's not as intuitive.
Apple should not break intuitiveness and usability just to change some esthetics, especially if this is just change for the same of change.
I agree with you completely, but still a part of me always remembers that people don't necessarily like change thrust upon them. Sometimes change is for the better, but the effect is not immediate. I only say this because I have changed the scollbars on Snow Leopard to Lion-like ones as well as using the scroll reverser app, and I have found I prefer these changes and I really like the idea of the bars vanishing when not active.

The better question here, is why do you feel so immune to violent crime?
Are you also confused about our obsessions with free speech? freedom of religion? or freedom of the press perhaps? Because those are protected in the Bill of Rights as well. Guns however, are unique in that they are the only material object, the only physical thing, that the Bill of Rights expressly protects ownership of. So we don't take to kindly to confused legislators who would try and take them away, or place unusual restrictions on that right.

For those who aren't intimately familiar with HD-DVD and Blu-Ray, I've really gotten into it in the past few months so here's a quick primer:
Discs will be replaced by downloads? Let me know when I can download a movie in 1080p with lossless 5.1 sound in a reasonable amount of time. Perhaps to the iToons generation that thinks 128kbps sound is good you can live with downloaded movies, but for me I don't think CD is good enough (I'm an SACD/DVD-A geek). Likewise I don't think DVD is good enough, why do I want to go backwards (downloadable movies) instead of forward (HD disc)?
Blu-Ray is the superior format, on paper. No doubt. However, there are a couple of wrenches in the works.
First, both formats are actually 90% the same. The physical storage medium is based on the same principles (blue laser) but different implementation (mostly depth of the reflective layer in the substrate). Blu-Ray is slightly denser and offers a higher total capacity (50GB vs 34GB, something like that). Blu-Ray is actually sort-of a superset of DVD from there, once you get to what's actually on the disc. HD-DVD has a new encryption layer (they learned from CSS), Blu-Ray uses this same scheme and then puts a 2nd layer of encryption on top of it. Both use the same codecs -- MPEG2, MPEG-4 H.262, and VC1 (Microsoft's codec), and Dolby Digital Plus, Dolby Pure HD, DTS Plus, etc.
I believe movie studio support determines who wins. The studios were split 50-50 pretty much. Then, something funny happened. Some HD-DVD studios announced they would ALSO support Blu-Ray. In my mind, that meant Blu-Ray wins.
The launch came, HD-DVD came out first and Toshiba led the way with a pair of chunky, heavy, PC-based players at $500 and $1000. Everyone hated the Toshiba players, they were slow, unwieldy, and have awful remotes. A few months later Blu-Ray launched with Samsung's $1000 player, and surprisingly this player was AWFUL, and the picture quality looks worse over HDMI than component because they forgot to turn off some video filtering. Worse, the Blu-Ray transfers thus far have been very poor quality. This seems to be because Blu-Ray is leaning towards old MPEG-2 HD transfers, while HD-DVD has embraced VC1 (which is the best of the 3 video codecs for quality and size) and gotten new encodings with Microsoft's attention. You can point out an error and give solution or you can tell that person to quit what he's doing because he has no idea. It's a lot easier to say, go read Apples documentation than to point out an error and explain it yourself.
No one is telling you to quit. They're telling you to go back and make sure you understand objects. (Clearly you don't). This is something you will have to understand for yourself.

I don't think I've been involved in any of your threads. What resources are you using to learn Objective-C?

I'm pretty happy that my 15" Powerbook is officially supported to run Aperture now. They must have reduced the system requirements, which might bode well for those of you with faster machines in terms of program performance and speed.

Sad to say, I think the Quicktime feeds were great, but even back when you were a tiny minority, you had to be lucky in getting on the Akamai bandwagon, and the stream was prone to big glitches. When Quicktime 7 (or was it 6?) came out, Steve wanted the HD treatment, and the audience got so big that the server charges would just be too large, and the whole operation questionable.
But I was at the Apple store when the G5 was announced, and it's that G5 that I got six months later. As for the excellent marketing idea of having the announced products available for sale, I think the perceived need for secrecy interferes too much with that. If they were shipping new Macs or iPods throughout the chain in the week before MacWorld, how long before some guy's cell phone takes a picture that ends up on, er, MacRumors?

As for the TSA not making air travel any safer you literally have nothing to go on other than making a blind assumption. It is simply another security layer and that in itself will deter some from giving it a try. What baffles me even more is their conclusion that international airtravel is the threat and domestic security should be reduced again. Nevermind that the 9/11 flights were all domestic flights and the 9/11 gang would have most likely been caught had they tried this stunt on an international flight with the pre 9/11 security measures of international travel. There is so much misinformation and ******** being propagated in this arena my trust in the competence of anyone involved in this business is absolute zero.

On keynote days, i generally set my homepage to the appleevents page, and make sure I dont go to any other sites that day. Then I just wander over to my local starbucks high speed hotspot in downtown auckland and watch the whole stream in H.264 :cool:
I hate finding out what will be released until after i have seen the keynote - Its like someone killing a movie for you, by telling you the twists just before you go see it. This way it's fresh, and you listen to Jobs' every word with anticipation

after the mac pro updates yesterday, i'm not after anything more. However, i would like to now see software improvements - Aperture2 must be due (though probably not at a consumer show) and i like think Apple might be looking to open up a new line of software - Maybe something to rival Adobe CS3? OS X doesn't even have a paint application for gods sake. Wouldn't Apple versions of photoshop/illustrator/after effects (bring back shake please!) be something cool to have a look at? Maybe thats more for WWDC?

I swear guys: I'm pretty sure most of the people dropping calls are only dropping calls because of the proximity sensor issues.
Next time you drop a call, check to see if it says "Call Failure" on the screen. If it doesn't, it's probably the sensor. (I'm talking to a wall, I'm sure�but if one person discovers the real problem, I'll be happy�

You do realise that's a Touch screen on that Asus all-in-one right ? You also realise HP's all in one has had a touch screen for a while. Yet the day Apple ships a touch screen iMac, you can bet a lot of people here will think they were the first to do it.

Sheesh, what a BORING update. Who cares about the shade of the buttons in the System Preferences? They're still using this same boring GREY that they've been using since Panther (minus the brushed steel). How boring is grey? I hate to say it, but Windows 7 with their translucent plastic is TEN TIMES more attractive than Mac OSX.

Now you see, OP is a true Apple diehard fan. FYI, Apple didn't and doesn't invent anything new. What they have in their devices is exactly what other devices have and had in them for a while. All Apple does is redesigns as they see it, but YOU pay the premium for that.

Isn't it interesting how a seemingly intentional act (active user tracking) changes to a "bug" once it's existence is published in the news media? :D
Not again... The database in question is NOT used by Apple to actively track users. It's a local cache on your phone, sent to you from Apple. This database serves a legitimate purpose on your phone to improve the performance of location services.
The issue is that this DB can be used by others (not Apple) to gain in-site into your relative location over time. Technically I wouldn't even call this a 'bug' since it's working as designed. However it is a serious oversight on Apples part.
