I'm not sure about novels but I would love to be able to read articles from Time, Wired, New Yorker et cetera on my iPod. In the past I've copied them from the web and transferred them into a 'note' file for viewing on my iPod. However I'd love to be able to download them from iTunes like a podcast. 99 cents wouldn't be un-reasonable if it's a well written article and it's advertisement free.

    Question:

Stringer's discussion of camera production for Apple was confirmed by The Wall Street Journal:

Early on, he raised the irony of Sony supplying camera components for Apple devices. It "always puzzles me," he said. "Why would I make Apple the best camera?"

    Answer:

Because you want to sell 20 million units with no marketing risk, minimal inventory cost, large prepayments from the customer, and unusual engineering support from the customer.

    That's why.

One order covers your R&D and production ramp costs across all your other products, profitably.

What makes it a piece of ****, exactly? The issues it had early on that were fixed with the software update? It's much more superior in every way to the 3GS than the 3GS was to the 3.

Hmm. I thought I covered this already.

Well, the screen issues were definitely not fixed by a software update. So that's a no go. The proximity sensor issue may have, but if you read my post far back enough you will see I'm discuss why I didn't buy the iPhone 4 while it was new... and I won't buy it now because.. it's old.

Oh.. but I think the update you have in mind is where apple fixed their hardware folly with a software patch. Right. They adjusted the bars so you would actually have to be receiving little or no coverage to only display one bar.

Your right, forgot they fixed the antenna with a software band-aid.

One of the most practical/feasible forms may be to just have 2 screens...an iPod as one screen AND a Tablet screen (i.e. eInk, LCD, etc.). In this way, regular iPod users can CHOOSE to just carry around JUST their iPod for music/video, or take along an ADDITIONAL tablet screen if they desire to watch a movie on the larger screen or read documents (e-books) or email or other apps (albeit with a shorter battery life).

Need to still have a "cool" form factor, such that the iPod nests into the tablet screen seamlessly and not some stupid corded device.

This idea would give the consumer both expandability and more incentive to buy an iPod. What most consumers DON'T want is to buy more and more devices that don't "leverage" each other. MOST consumers don't have an unlimited amount of disposable income to buy a shuffle, a nano, an iPodV, a Mac Tablet, an iPhone, etc.

    Your thoughts?

Yeah, I think the big-screen (e-ink?) add-on the way you describe it makes the most sense. I was clueless as to how the second screen could fit on the iPod, but I think your idea's pretty feasible with today's tech and would be pretty usable too. If you want to read for just a few minutes, then you don't need the add-on. But if you sit down to read for a few hours, then you plug the bigger screen and you're ready to go. Chances are you won't try to read War and Peace on your way to the supermarket, so you don't need to lug the second screen around all the time. If Apple came out with something like that, I'd buy one right away, although I must say I'd like a color screen, even if it only displays a few really basic colors.

Of course, if the reader does not require the iPod but merely uses it as a storage device to pull stuff from, I think it would indeed boost iPod sales because the iPod would effectively become an add-on for the reader, so it would become attractive to some people who just don't care about the iPod's music capabilities. If the reader is built with the iPod in mind, it could easily have some kind of built-in iPod "dock", as you suggested. Yeah... It seems so perfect that I wonder why Apple hasn't released it yet!!! :P

I don't recall massive outcry from the devs on those other platforms. Why do you think that is?

For Nintendo back in the 80's, there was massive outcry. Not only did they gatekeep but they had a high licensing fee and capped the number of releases per year per developer. So yeah, devs were pissed. Atari even lied to the patent office just so they could reverse engineer the lockout chip (and got sued for it).

So if you don't recall, you probably weren't paying attention

Before getting slapped... I guess if youre a billionaire you can shove earbuds into a strangers ear, but here in Real World USA the results would not be pretty. Do that with your girlfriend, I dont think ANYONE would want a stranger theyve known for 1 minute coming up to them and putting crap into their ear.

And you think most people would want strangers trying to send them songs and pictures?

Along the same lines, anyone else remember the episode of The Office where Jim used "earbud sharing" with Pam? Gotta love tasteful product placement.

For months on end we've been bombarded with Zune-friendly "news" articles calling it an "iPod killer". Even before Microsoft had a name for it, before they had any sort of design for it, while it was still vaporware, the media kept hammering home, "iPod killer" while seeming to drool over the prospect.

I guess you've been reading different articles than I have. Since they've announced details and pictures I've mostly been seeing articles along the lines of "What a Turd".

It seems that since Wal-Mart tends to service the very lowest income class in our culture and many of these folks tend to not have computers, and to the extent they do, tend to not have broadband either, it seems there is a degree of mutual exclusivity of markets.

Wow. That's an elitist statement. I think you need to travel around the country and see who really shops at Wal-Mart -- basically every socio-economic group. From poorest to the wealthiest. Even people with broadband!

I would be considered upper-middle class and my family shops there all the time. And we have friends that would be considered wealthy, perhaps even super-wealthy, and they shop there, too.

Seriously... you all keep doing what you are doing... modern civilization will fall either way. We've been thieving from mother earth pretty heavily over the past 150 years so we'll get our's collectively as a species soon... no need to feel left out. In the meantime... I'll be keeping my $1500. Thanks.

I'm afraid I have to disagree with you. Humans are social creatures, we evolved being social to help us survive against great odds.

    ...

I'll see if I can find it, but I wouldn't boast about having Asperger's, it's better to boast about being an NT (Myers-Briggs personality type)

I was joking. I don't think we need a society of of Dr. House walking around.

    My sentiments exactly. . .

It probably was a typo though, I don't see how iPhone 4 users are complaining, if anything it's the people going to be off contract I.E the 3GS crowd.
Regardless if people want the latest in tech it's their business. I can't wait to upgrade though :p

When I just upgraded through iTunes on Mac, after downloading for a second it flashed "Verifying iPhone with Apple".

Has that been there before? Did I miss it in the past?It always does that, it actually signs the OS from Apple's servers. So now 4.3 cannot be installed anymore.

I don't know that I would call it feminized, but it certainly seems bratty and petulant. Sell them everywhere! Someone mentioned Starbucks and 7-11... and while they were being douchenozzles about it, I say those sound like great ideas. I don't care if they sell them at hot dog carts in the park... the more places that sell them and the more people that see them the better. When you limit an item to boutique stores, the items get a stigma of being posh and elitist... that is NOT how you move tons of product.

Having more distribution points does not increased the supply; it just spreads it out more thinly, making it even harder to locate the few supplies that do exist.

(paraphrasing) "When the original iPhone was released it was EDGE only even though 3g was widespread"...

In Kalamazoo/Battle Creek, we still don't have 3G from AT&T. And many major cities are en route for "4G"

My wife said no too and this even includes my wish for one for my upcoming bday to get one.

    Your wife said 'no'?

You know, this is a question that I've been wanting to ask for a long time, and this is not directed only at you, but to all responses similar to yours I've seen on such topics. It's an honest question I have, because it just blows my mind:

What the hell kind of relationship do you people have with your spouses?? I mean, seriously??! You need their explicit PERMISSION to buy something you want, with your money, and it gets to their point of people BEGGING their wives to let them buy something, only to be turned down?! How the hell do you get yourself into this kind of dynamic? The only plausible reason that a wife may be against it is if you guys are so short on cash, that $500 will break the account and drive you into poverty? And if this is the case, then you people should have a bit more responsibility than to beg your wives to let you buy something that you clearly can't afford. If you CAN afford it, and it is your $$, then why the hell do you even need to ask your wife in the 1st place, and what right does she have to refuse you? Do your wives make all the money? An iPad isn't a car or a house that needs to be a consensual and debated purchase. Your wife shouldn't have the ability (nor the desire) to stop you from buying one.

This is honestly something that Id like an answer to. Some of you seem to have a 'child/parent' relationship, instead of husband/wife. If she's the breadwinner of the house, and you mooch of her, fine I'd understand. But if you bring in the $$? Sounds like a disturbing and cold relationship. Why does she get to dominate you and dictate your decisions, void of any debate or discussion?

from something inherent in black "culture"

What is wrong with suggesting that there might be something inherently wrong with black culture. It would be racist to suggest there is something inherently wrong with black GENES, but culture is something which can and sometimes should change.

Parts of black culture which have proven to have negative effects in the United States is the glorification of begetting women with children regardless of marital status.

Dialects within African American communities in the United States have also had a negative effect on the black community. Its very hard for someone to find a job if they choose not to speak passable English.

These are issues/trends that leaders in the African American community need to think seriously about attempting to curb because they are and will continue to cause major problems.
